Mission

Via Nativa Imports, Inc. works directly with independent artisans, community based collectives and non-profit organizations, enabling crafts people responsible for production to earn a sustainable living while preserving their traditional lifestyle. Along with artisans we create fine design and sustainable wood jewelry straight from Nicaragua.

Fair Trade
Via Nativa Imports works along with the principles of fair trade. We create opportunities for the economically disadvantaged artisans in Nicaragua. We promote transparent business practices between the artisan and ourselves and other markets/businesses they work with. We encourage their independence to work with other markets and also offer business and marketing advice. Fair pay is of top priority. There is always a dialogue between both parties. The amount of an order is agreed to and 50% is paid in advance. We respect local laws and social norms and the rights of a child. Although, there is rarely participation of a child it will never affect their educational, play or well-being. Artisans work in small ad-hoc workshops in their homes and therefore family participation is inevitable at times. Artisans work in safe conditions and wear a mask working with wood. Via Nativa distributes donations collected in New York to rural and urban areas of Nicaragua. Twice a year we gather clothing, medicine and any other donations to distribute to people in need all over Nicaragua. For more information please contact alessandra@vianativa.com.

Sustainability
Most of our newest jewelry is made from reclaimed wood. This wood comes from a FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified furniture manufacturer. We also offer spalted wood jewelry which is not logged (see below for definition). All jewelry and accessories are finished by hand with the highest of quality. Our labels use recycled paper, some handmade in Nicaragua from Plantain leaves other labels use soy inks.  We also are committed to using all natural wood finishing such as linseed oil and pure tung oil for all of our wood jewelry.  Click here to read more!

Via Nativa Imports also works along with a Fair Trade, non profit organization, Esperanza en Accion. They are based in Managua, Nicaragua and work with a variety of partner groups all over Nicaragua who create pine needle bowls, clay jewelry, soap stone sculptures and so much more.
